Vehicle Tax in Canada
The application of sales taxes to vehicles in Canada...
There are no specific road taxes to pay in Canada. However, GST and PST (if applicable) or HST apply to the sale of cars in most provinces/ territories.
HST should only apply if the vehicle is purchased from an HST registrant (an individual or business registered with the Canada Revenue Agency for tax purposes). If the vehicle is purchased from an individual who is not a HST registrant, the purchaser will still be subject to a retail sales tax.
Canada does not have a federal car tax however some municipalities do levy a car tax. For example Toronto has introduced an annual Personal Vehicle Tax to be paid annually on registering or re-registering a vehicle. Refer to relevant municipal authorities for information about any applicable vehicle taxes.
